Internships and apprenticeships
If you are studying at university, an internship is the perfect way to gain valuable experience and help you make the right choice for you when you graduate. Our businesses offer an array of opportunities from summer internships to ‘year in industry’ placements and apprenticeships. Work experience
For UK school students and leavers, we partner with Young Professionals, the UK and Irelands leading student network who are helping thousands of school students to accelerate their careers in apprenticeships and work experience programs. We will post about our next event with Young Professionals below, but in the meantime, you can check out @youngprouk | Linktree

Do you want to be an engineer and explore a career in science
In July 2022, we hosted two events with Young Professionals - one online work experience event and one in person work experience event. We were joined by over 500 students online where we explored different routes into engineering careers, watched a live laboratory tour, saw a hackathon, got tips on how to make a great CV, learnt about software engineering and much more. During our in person event, 26 students attended at our site in Malvern where they discovered some of our particle measuring products, assembled different parts of the lab instruments, saw live testing and experienced a team engineering task. Both events were a great success and inspired the next generation of engineers - thank you to everyone involved!

International Women in Engineering Day
To celebrate International Women in Engineering Day, we joined the Young Professionals multi-employer event where we heard from a number of top engineers from some of the largest engineering companies. We discussed the various pathways into the industry and held a Q&A with Rebecca Levy and Clare Fenwick-Hyde who spoke all about her career as a software engineer at our operating company Malvern Panalytical. It was an inspiring evening and great to see so many women involved and sharing their stories and advice.

STEM Career Pathways
We hosted an event on the topic of ‘STEM career paths’ to talk about the different routes you can take into STEM careers. There was a lively panel debate between our current year in industry students and apprentices where we explored the differences between entering your career through university or an apprenticeship. All of our speakers were so impressive that we concluded that no matter which learning path you choose you can have a successful, dynamic and rewarding STEM career. A big thank you to our panelists Katie Willoughby, Elena Sofocleous, Lewis Cameron, Sharla Harvey, David Rolfe, Matthew Smith, Luke Purdie and Matt Hollis.
Diversity in STEM
(Science Technology, Engineering and Math)
– supporting you through your career
At Spectris, we prize diversity and play to everybody’s strengths, it’s part of our core value ‘Be true’. We are on a journey towards a workforce that proportionately reflects diversity in the population and celebrates unique perspectives.
Here are a few of our activities that we are supporting as we develop our STEM diversity program, with the help of our colleagues and partner organisations:
International Women in Engineering Day
International Women in Engineering Day is an international awareness campaign to raise the profile of women in engineering and focus attention on the amazing career opportunities available to girls in this exciting industry. It celebrates the outstanding achievements of women engineers throughout the world.
Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers
Spectris are sponsors of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) annual conference – In November 2021, teams from three of our platform businesses – HBK, Omega and Malvern Panalytical, attended the SHPE Conference in Orlando to connect with Hispanic talent in STEM. The teams met with many high-quality candidates and collected over 150 resumes from both students and alumni. Ahmar Bajwa (Omega), Alfonso Moreira (HBK) and Jim Wyatt (HBK) all gave great presentations, highlighting some of the interesting things our colleagues do at our companies including brewing beer and building cars! The event was a great success, and we are looking forward to our continued partnership with SHPE in 2022, moving forward with job offers and building inclusive and equitable teams across our businesses.
Women's Engineering Society
Malvern Panalytical are members of the Women’s Engineering Society (WES) and took part in the Lottie Tour. WES Lottie Tour is an annual campaign that takes 'Lottie' to many different locations accompanying lots of different engineering friends who show Lottie the work they do in engineering and related careers. WES Lottie Tour has a number of audiences - its primary aim is for Lottie to inspire and encourage young girls (and boys) to think of careers in engineering and STEM subjects to be open to everyone.
“
I became a member of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) at the age of 18, when I was invited to a pre-college conference. This conference was put together by the University of Illinois students in SHPE to prepare the incoming class for what to expect and how to succeed in university. I immediately made a new family and have been involved with the organization ever since. The year after I graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, I was invited to help plan and execute the annual conventions hosted by SHPE, which take place in different cities each year. My role is to organize the Tech Talks, but I also get the chance to have inspiring conversations with students and professionals at these conferences. Occasionally, I have the opportunity to speak in an Alumni Insights series with my local chapter - the last time I did this was in April, but I am planning to speak with them again in the near future. I look forward to continuing to give back to the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers; with the support of Spectris and HBK, we will make a significant difference in the lives of students with rising identities.
